Record a working demo ahead of time in case the live one fails.

One warning that applies across the board: free tiers have daily limits, and they run out at the worst moment. Spread heavy AI use across the ten days rather than saving it all for the last one.

Open, local, and lower-impact options

You aren’t limited to the corporate chatbots, and if your project touches sensitive data you shouldn’t be.

You can run a model on your own laptop, free and offline, and nothing leaves your machine. LM Studio is a normal app and the easiest way in; Ollama is the command-line version. The open models themselves (Llama, Mistral, Qwen, Gemma) are at huggingface.co/models as well as OpenRouter.

Most image generators were trained on artists’ work without consent. If that matters for your project, Adobe Firefly trains only on licensed work (and you already have it through Temple). Have I Been Trained? and Fairly Trained can tell you about the rest.

These models use real energy and water, and the difference between models is large. See the AI Energy Score leaderboard. Using the smallest model that does the job, and writing one careful prompt instead of regenerating ten times, happens to be the faster way to work anyway.

Ground rules

Anything you paste into a chatbot leaves your laptop, and free tiers often train on it. No unpublished research, no one else’s data, no personal information, nothing confidential. If you can’t say where the data ends up, don’t send it, or use a local model (section 3).

Library material has rules. Metadata, citations, and files you legitimately downloaded are fine to work with. Bulk-downloading from a licensed database is not, and can get access cut off for the whole university. If your project needs a big corpus, ask about finding data early.

AI invents sources, complete with realistic titles and DOIs. Verify every citation before it goes in front of anyone. In a library, this is the mistake people will remember.

Note what tools you used in your submission and what they did, the same way a paper names its software. And be ready to explain how your code works. “The AI wrote it” is not an answer

All listed resources can run in a browser unless noted, and everything is free or has a free tier unless marked paid.
